Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

I tried something new today.

I’ve been crocheting for more years than I care to admit. Let’s just say I’ve made miles (and miles) of loops and knots. I’ve even taught a few people how to make hooks and yarn work together to make anything from spa cloths to blankets.

But there was always one technique that I would consider and then immediately dismiss: amigurumi.

But not today.

What is amigurumi? In short, it’s an art (usually crochet) of making little, stuffed items like animals or dolls. There are even kits for making favorite movie characters. Look it up, it’s pretty cool!

For me, though, it presented a challenge thanks to a few post-covid challenges I’ve been dealing with for about two years or so. Without getting into details, let’s just say that one of my eyes likes to dance to the tune of its own drummer. I never know when it decides to do the electric slide when I’m in the mood to waltz.

Where was I?

Ah yes, today I grabbed a couple of skeins of yarn, a pattern, a cup of coffee, my curiosity, and a hefty dose of gumption. (and really, how often do we get to use the word “gumption?)

Still, the question echoed in my head: Could I do it?

Eight hours, two cups of coffee, many breaks, and countless instances of gently explaining to my cat that I do not need help and yarn isn’t edible, I finished.

It’s a little lopsided.

I love it.

My point? Stepping out of my comfort zone reminded me to be patient with the challenges life put in my path. Plus, I made a porg. I mean, really, how cute is that lopsided little guy?
