Make the Bed

Ah, Dear Reader, I see that you are still here.

You could say the same for me? Well, yes, you would be right.

Once again, I am stepping out of a bout of brain fog. If you recall, I have been living with brain fog and fatigue for a few years…four of them, actually.

But, that is not to for us to dwell upon today.

Today is about getting through the fog.

Years ago, I read an article—or maybe an essay—that inspired me. I’ll look it up and add it to the end of today’s blog.

Then we’ll both know!

Now, where was I?

Ah yes, make the bed. It’s a phrase and a chore that I applied to my life many years ago after a layoff. I still use it to this day. It’s the little things that get us through the big things. And that pesky old brain fog was hanging out with its buddy, fatigue. When those two characters hang out together, I have to choose where to spend my energy.

My mainstays are (in no particular order):

Make the bed

Clear the sink/dishes

Do the laundry

Read

Connect with friends

Most foggy days, I have come to appreciate the last two more than anything. They kept me going as I navigated the fog while the world navigated covid.

I still refuse to capitalize that word, and you can’t make me!

My thoughts drifted again. Are we surprised?

I didn’t think so!

I’ll leave you with this, Dear Reader: find your must-dos and make a small list. Tuck it aside where it’s easy to find. I hope you never need it, but if someday you find yourself in a brain fog pickle (or something similar), your future self will thank you.

PS. The photo at the top is Consuelo Vanderbilt’s bedroom in Marble House. If it looks familiar, that is because it is George Russell’s bedroom in “The Gilded Age.”

PPS. “Make Your Bed” was a speech by US Navy Admiral William H. McRaven.
