Book Review: A Race to Splendor by Ciji Ware

Let me start by saying I loved this book. However, my timing for starting it left something to be desired. This is by no means the fault of the author.

I blame my husband.

You see just as the sun was setting while we were away for a conference he attended, he declared that the building was moving. We were on the 30th floor. I’m pretty sure it was him, not the building (at least that’s what I told myself), but nevertheless, I was unnerved…a little.

I then settled back down to read A Race to Splendor. Of course, I was at the point where the earthquake of 1906 was taking place. Ms. Ware’s depiction of Amelia living through the quake was so well-crafted (combined with my husband’s earlier declaration) that I became torn between not being able to put it down and looking up the emergency exits in the hotel!

As for the book, itself, it is stunning. It’s obvious that Ms. Ware puts her heart and soul into her work. The research, the character building, and the settings, all beautifully gel into a riveting page-turner.
Every time I read one of Ciji Ware’s books I become more and more of a fan of her work. A Race to Splendor is no exception.
